What is a cold shoe microphone accessory?

I want to buy one for my son-in-laws video but don't know what I am looking for. Any ideas?

What is a cold shoe microphone accessory?
A shoe is a slot on a camera or in this case, camcorder that allows you to attach a light or a mic. A hot shoe provides the electricity, while a cold shoe is simply a holder for the mic. So in your case, look for mics that use external batteries, and don't draw power from the shoe. The Rode Videomic and stereo videomic are both good choices as they use 9v batteries, and provide excellent sound for a relatively low price. Hope this helps!
Reply:I think you'll find that it's a means of attaching a mic to (?) a camera etc without it making an automatic electrical connection (like most flash attachments do to cameras) and therefore needs a separate connecting lead.

Reply:Its a tiny microphone that you attach to your shoe, but unfortunately it only works in the fridge
